UNIFORM MICROSPHERES HAVING ANY DESIRED DIAMETER WITHIN THE RANGE OF ABOUT 2 TO 40 MICRONS ARE READILY PRODUCED BY INTOUDCING A LAMINAR JET OF A CORE LIQUID CARRYING MATERIAL IN SOLUTION OR SUSPENSION WITHIN A LAMINAR FLOWING SHEATH LIQUID, SAID CORE LIQUID JET BEING PERIODICALLY DISTURBED, ALLOWING THE DROPLETS OF CORE LIQUID THUS PRODUCED TO REMAIN SUSPENDED WITHIN THE SHEATH LIQUID FOR A TIME SUFFICIENT FOR THE MATERIAL SUSPENDED OR DISSOLVED IN SAID DROPLETS TO FORM CONDENSED MICROSPHERES, AND REMOVING SAID MICROSPHERES FROM THE SHEATH LIQUIDTHE VARIATION IN DIAMETER OF THE MICROSPHERES IS ABOUT 2%, WHICH IS NEAR THE ACCURACY LIMITATION OF THE MEASURING INSTRUMENTATION. |
