abstract A HIGH RESOLUTION PROCESS OF TRNSFERRING AND DEVELOPING ELECTROSTATIC CHARGE PATTERNS IS DESCRIBED. AN ELECTROSTATIC CHARGE PATTERN IS FORMED ON AN IMAGE-BEARING MEMBER HAVING A VERY LOW SHEFFIELD SMOOTHNESS VALUE. A RECEIVING ELEMENT IS PROVIDED WHICH ALSO HAS A LOW SHEFFIELD SMOOTHNESS VALUE. THE SMOOTH SURFACED MEMBER IS THEN PLACED IN FACE-TO-FACE CONTACT WITH THE RECEIVING ELEMENT IN THE PRESENCE OF A THIN LAYER OF AN ELECTRICALLY INSULATING ISOPARAFFINIC HYDROCARBON TRANSFER LIQUID HAVING A BOILING POINT IN THE RANGE OF 105 TO 260*C. DURING CONTACT, THE CHARGE PATTERN IS TRANSFERRED TO THE RECEIVING ELEMENT IN THE ABSENCE OF EXTERNAL PRESSURE OR ELECTRICAL BIAS POTENTIAL. THE TRANSFERRED IMAGE IS THEN DEVELOPED TO FORM A HIGH RESOLUTION VISIBLE IMAGE.
