abstract The invention relates to the field of chemistry, in particular to the 2-nitro-4,5-diarylimidazole derivatives, which can be used as biologically active compounds, catalysts etc. The essence of the invention is that a process for obtaining 2- is proposed. nitro-4,5-diphenylimidazole by the demethylation reaction with a mineral acid at pH≤2 in aqueous medium of the coordinating compounds of Co (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) with 2-nitro-4,5-diphenylimidazole . After neutralization of the resultant mixture the target compound is extracted with a water-immiscible solvent and isolated from the extract. Initial coordinating compounds can be obtained at the 4,5-diphenylimidazole interaction with the metal nitrate respectively under solvothermal conditions with in situ nitration of the heterocycle.
