abstract The present invention provides nucleic acid molecules encoding catalytic subunits of various protein kinases from pea plants that are new members of the protein kinase 2A family that interact directly with red and far-red light absorbing photoreceptor phytochrome A. These genes are expressed exclusively in flower and peduncle organs. The catalytic subunits of protein kinase interact more preferentially with the Pfr form and dephosphorylate in a Zn 2+ / Fe 2+ -dependent manner. The invention also describes methods and procedures for generating expression cassettes and plasmids for synthesizing protein kinases or biologically active fragments of such enzymes, and for using such expression cassettes and plasmids. The present invention can be used to design the flowering time of a transgenic plant comprising the nucleic acid molecule to bloom earlier or slower than the control plant. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants transformed with anti-sense genes bloom earlier than control plants, similar to phytochrome B mutant Arabidopsis plants. Sense transgenic plants bloom slower than control plants.
