abstract |
The present invention relates to a cast composite, which supplies an aluminum-based matrix alloy and forms a mixture of free-flowing boron carbide particles and an aluminum-based matrix alloy in the melt to wet the boron carbide particles with the matrix alloy and distribute the particles throughout the volume of the melt. Prepared by stirring, a molten mixture is cast, and the flowability of the molten mixture is determined by (a) maintaining the magnesium content in the matrix metal below about 0.2 wt%, or (b) with a matrix metal containing less than 0.2 wt% magnesium And by adding more magnesium to the mixture immediately before casting, or by (c) having less than 0.2% by weight titanium in the mixture. |
