abstract | PURPOSE:To readily obtain phenol using safe substances without explosiveness, by reacting benzene with excess CO and an oxidizing agent in the presence of a Pd based catalyst, 1,10-phenanthroline and under mild condition of a low temperature. CONSTITUTION:Benzene and a bland of CO with an oxidizing agent (preferably O2) at 1:3-15 molar ratio are used and reacted in the presence of a Pd catalyst and 1,10-phenanthroline (in an amount of 0.5-2mol. based on the Pd atoms) at 150-220 deg.C under 7-30kg/cm<2> pressure to afford phenol. Palladium acetate, Pd black, and Pd-C are preferred as the Pd based catalyst, supported and prepared by impregnating a carrier with an aqueous solution of PdCl2 acidified with hydrochloric acid, etc., then activated by reduction, etc., for use. The amount of the catalyst used is 0.002-0.010g atom (expressed in terms of Pd metal) based on 1mol. benzene. |
