titleOfInvention Modification of glyoxal
abstract PURPOSE: To enable outstanding improvement of finished whiteness and heat- yellowing resistance of the titled compound useful as a raw material for textile finishing agent, paper-processing agent, deodorizer, etc., by treating an aqueous solution of glyoxal containing an acid component at an amount within a specific range with activated carbon. n CONSTITUTION: Glyoxal can be modified by using an aqueous solution of glyoxal containing ≥0.05pts.wt. of an acid (in terms of acetic acid) based on 100pts.wt. of glyoxal and treating the solution with activated carbon. The glyoxal is produced e.g. by the vapor-phase oxidization of ethylene glycol, the oxidization of acetaldehyde with nitric acid, etc., in a manner to form ≥0.05pts. of the acid component defined above. The preparation of the acid component is carried out e.g. by the addition of acetic acid. The activated carbon used in the above process is generally produced from coconut shell charcoal or and the treatment is carried out batchwise or continuously. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
