titleOfInvention | Preparation of glyoxal from ethylene glycol |
abstract | PURPOSE: To carry out the purification of the aqueous solution of glyoxal obtained by the vapor-phase oxidation of ethylene glycol, economically, by removing the formaldehyde from the solution by distillation, and decoloring the solution and/or removing the metallic ion from the solution with a cation exchange resin. n CONSTITUTION: Glyoxal obtained by the vapor-phase oxidation (3) of ethylene glycol is recovered (5) as an aqueous solution, and distilled to remove formaldehyde (11). By this process, the content of odorous formaldehyde is suppressed below the standard level and at the same time, the aqueous solution is concentrated to reduce the amount of the solution to be treated. The concentrated solution is then subjected to the decoloring process (15) and/or the removing process (16) of the metallic ion with a cation exchange resin to remove the color developed by the preceding heating process or eliminate the metallic ions exising in the reaction product as impurities or dissolved from the metallic material of the apparatus during the process. A purified glyoxal (23) can be prepared effectively and economically by this process. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1984,JPO&Japio |
