titleOfInvention Water-repellent composition
abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compsn. of the emulsion type which is excellent in water repellency, storage stability, and dryness, by emulsifying a particular wax and an olefin-maleic anhydride derivative in water in the presence of a water-soluble alkaline compd. CONSTITUTION:An olefin-maleic anhydride derivative (B) is obtd. by copolymerizing a 4-60C alpha-olefin with maleic anhydride in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator and, if necessary, partially esterifying the copolymer with an org. monohydroxy compd. Wax (A) having a melting point of 40-90 deg.C (e.g., paraffin wax) is blended with the component B in a weight ratio of 1:0.01-0.7. If necessary, a hydrocarbon resin (C) (e.g., petroleum resin) is added to the blend in such an amt. as will provide an (A+C)/B weight ratio of 1:0.01-0.7. The blend is emulsified in water in the presence of an alkaline compd. (D) (e.g., KOH).
