abstract (57) [Summary] [Object] To provide a new and improved spinal disc prosthesis for replacing a damaged spinal disc. [Structure] The spinal disc prosthesis 5 has an upper rigid plate 12 A lower rigid plate 14 and an elastomer core 16 interposed between and fixed to these plates. The elastomer core 16 has an outer peripheral surface 32 whose upper peripheral surface 22 extends substantially perpendicular to the upper plate 12. The lower portion 34 of the elastomeric core includes an outer peripheral surface 36 that extends generally perpendicular to the lower plate 24. An intermediate portion 38 of the elastomeric core 16 extending between the upper portion 30 and the lower portion 34 has a concave outer peripheral surface. Each of the upper plate 12 and the lower plate 14 extends into the elastomeric core 16 and has a plurality of ribs 50, 51, 52, which secure the elastomeric core to the upper and lower plates. 54 is provided.
