abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer composition capable of adhering to the surface of a living organism and usable as a stable medium for slow release of an active ingredient by effecting the precipitation polymerization of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid in a nonaqueous solvent system in a specified polymerization system. n CONSTITUTION: A reactor is filled continuously or in one step with a solution containing a nonaqueous solvent system and a monomer feedstock dissolved therein [the above monomer feedstock contains a carboxyl monomer having at least one activated C-C olefinic double bond and at least one carboxyl group and comprises about 5 to 100%, based on the feedstock, carboxyl monomer and the balance of a vinylidene comonomer]. A reagent system is polymerized with the polymerization product under the autogenous pressure in an inert atmosphere in a sealed vessel or at atmospheric under reflex in an open vessel while the polymerization temperature is being maintained at about 0 to 100°C [the polymerization product having a mean particle size smaller than about 10 μm is precipitated and deposited from the solution. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO |
