PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compounds in a high yield while reducing the relative amount of catalyst used by carrying out firstly the hydrocyanation of a bicyclo[2,2,1]-5-heptene-2-carbonitrile in the presence of a specified catalyst system and then treating the reaction mixture with a treating agent for the catalysts. n CONSTITUTION: Bicyclo[2,2,1]-5-heptene-2-carbonitrile of formula III is cyanohydrated in the presence of a Lewis acid such as zinc chloride and a zero valent nickel complex catalyst of formula I {A, B, C and D are neutral ligand of formula II [P is phosphorous; (x), (y), and (z) are formula OR (R is ≤18C alkyl and aryl)]} such as tetrakis(triphenylphosphite)nickel. A catalyst- treating agent, e.g. an aqueous alkali solution such as an aqueous NaOH solution, an aqueous acid solution such as hydrochloric acid or an oxidizing agent such as H 2 O 2 is then brought into contact with the resultant granular product. A hydrophobic organic solvent is allowed to flow down through the resultant granular product layer and washing is subsequently carried out using water, thus obtaining the objective compounds of formula IV (X and Y are H or cyano) used as an intermediate for organic synthesis. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio |
