titleOfInvention Carbon michael hardening activated by teritary amine and epoxy
abstract Carbon Michael cure is effected by combining a tertiary amine component, an epoxide component, a component with Michael Reaction-active methylene groups, and a component with Michael Reaction-active alkene groups. The tertiary amine and epoxy components are combined during or shortly before combination of all components. Two-pack ambient cure coatings using this method have improved combinations of pot life, early cure, gloss, and ultimate cure. Improved resistance to water is achieved when the epoxide component and/or the tertiary amine component are pre-reacted with a Michael Reaction-active component during cure. Low cost and hazard, together with good cure and resistance properties are achieved when the Michael Reaction-active alkene groups are from a particular class of maleic/fumaric polyesters. When the methylene groups are acetoacetate moieties, low colour is achieved when the alkene groups are acryloxypropionate moieties, or when the alkene groups are acrylate moieties and the molar ratio of alkene moieties to acetoacetate moieties is greater than 1.5. Lower colour is achieved with fumarate and acrylate when the methylene groups are malonate rather than acetoacetate.
