Provided is a simple method for producing a sulfonium salt useful as a quencher, particularly a triarylsulfonium having an arylthio group and having an anion residue such as a sulfonic acid or a carboxylic acid, without limitation to the structure of the sulfonium. A method for producing a sulfonium salt of the formula (2), wherein the sulfonium salt of the formula (1) is reacted with a Lewis acid and then reacted with an alkali metal salt of an organic acid or an inorganic acid.
