A durable, antifouling cross-linked zwitterionic coating is disclosed that is covalently grafted to the surface of a substrate. When exposed to a light source, the zwitterionic monomer reacts with the crosslinking agent and activated radicals on the surface of the substrate to form a crosslinked zwitterionic coating while simultaneously tethering it to the surface of the substrate. . Zwitterionic coatings can be micropatterned using photomasking techniques. Zwitterionic coatings can be applied to a variety of substrates, including medical devices and systems.
