A separator is made of fibers, and pores are formed between the fibers, a non-woven substrate having a large number of pores, and a polymer coating layer formed on part or all of the surface of the fibers. The polymer coating layer contains a polymer having a tensile strength of 80 MPa or more and a tensile modulus and a flexural modulus of 3,000 MPa or more, respectively. [Effect] The production cost of the electrochemical element can be reduced, and the generation of leakage current can be prevented by controlling the size of pores existing in the nonwoven fabric substrate, and the mechanical strength can be improved.
