The present invention relates generally to fluids and microfluidics, and more particularly to devices and methods that break a parent droplet into two or more droplets. A system and method for splitting a parent droplet into two or more droplets by biasing the parent droplet against an obstacle is directed. In some cases, the parent droplet is split into at least a first and a second droplet, each directed to a separate channel. In some cases, the channels may be constructed and arranged so that the droplet velocity of the first and second droplets is substantially the same as the velocity of the parent droplet. In some cases, such droplets may be split repeatedly, for example, a parent droplet is split into two daughter droplets, then each droplet is split again, and so on. For example, one parent droplet can eventually be split into daughter droplets such as 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, etc. In some cases, the daughter droplet may be substantially monodisperse.
