abstract | The present invention provides a method for producing powdery hydroxyalkyl celluloses having excellent water solubility and excellent caking resistance. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] Step (1): A powdery cellulose raw material and an alkylene oxide are reacted in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide under a condition that the water content relative to the cellulose raw material is 20% by mass or more and 200% by mass or less. Step for obtaining mixture 1 containing hydroxyalkyl cellulose, step (2): After step (1), polyhydric carboxylic acid having a hydroxyl group is mixed to neutralize the alkali metal hydroxide, and mixture 2 is obtained. Step of obtaining and Step (3): The mixture 2 obtained in Step (2) is dried to adjust the volatile content after drying to 13.0% by mass or less, then pulverized, and median A process for obtaining powdery hydroxyalkyl cellulose having a diameter of 10 μm or more and 900 μm or less.
