In-situ preparation of a peracid-based removable antimicrobial coating composition and methods of use for controlling microorganisms at various locations. I) a water-soluble or water-dispersible film-forming agent which is polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol copolymer or polyvinyl pyrrolidone; ii) an inert solvent; iii) a peroxyacid precursor such as tetraacetylethylenediamine; iv) sodium percarbonate V) a composition comprising a rheology modifier to provide shear thinning properties; and vi) a quaternary ammonium antibacterial agent having a shear thinning index of 1.5 to 6.0 and An antibacterial liquid coating composition comprising at least one peroxyacid antibacterial agent having a viscosity of 0.5 to 100 Ps * s at a shear rate of 1 sec -1 at 10 ° C.
