abstract |
The present invention provides a method for culturing oil-bearing microorganisms using xylose as a fixed carbon source. Also provided are microorganisms that have been genetically engineered to metabolize xylose as a fixed carbon source and convert xylose to oil. Special advantages of the process provided herein include the production of oil rather than alcohol by a microbial fermentation process utilizing xylose. In one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a microorganism of a plant kingdom comprising a recombinant nucleic acid capable of acting to produce an active xylose metabolic pathway enzyme.
