abstract A system using harmonics of a carbon dioxide laser is provided for ultrasonic inspection using a high energy mid-range infrared laser beam. A high energy carbon dioxide laser 30 connected to a harmonic generator 46 is used to adjust the laser beam to be emitted at a single wavelength. The harmonic generator 46 converts the laser beam 44 into the mid-infrared region for optimal ultrasonic inspection. Furthermore, the harmonics 48 of the laser beam 44 are directed to the inspection object, the surface of the object is thermoelastically excited to cause an ultrasonic displacement on the object, and the ultrasonic displacement is measured.
