abstract Living cells in a liquid suspension are counted in an automatic cell counter that focuses the image of the suspension on a digital imaging sensor. The digital imaging sensor includes at least 4,000,000 pixels each having an area of 2 × 2 μm or less, and images a field of view of at least 3 mm 2 . This sensor allows the counter to compress the optical component into an optical path of 20 cm or less when placed vertically without changing the direction of the optical path as a whole. The floor area of the entire device is less than 300 cm 2. Light source activation, sensor image autofocus, and digital cell counting are all activated by simply inserting the sample holder into the instrument. The suspension is placed in a sample chamber in the form of a slide shaped to ensure proper orientation in the cell counter.
