Provided is a europium-activated oxynitride phosphor that emits red light having a peak wavelength of 630 nm or more using an inexpensive oxide or the like as a raw material containing an alkaline earth metal such as strontium, and a method for producing the same. The following general formula (1): (M 1-x Eu x ) Al a Si b O c N d C e (1) (In the formula, M represents an alkaline earth element, 0 <x <0.2, 1.3 ≦ a ≦ 1.8, 3.5 ≦ b ≦ 4, 0.1 ≦ c ≦ 0.3, 6 .5 ≦ d ≦ 7 and 0.01 ≦ e ≦ 0.1) An oxynitride phosphor having a composition represented by formula (1) and activated by divalent europium.
