PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenolic compound that exhibits low viscosity and low hygroscopicity at 50 ° C. and exhibits good mechanical properties when reactively cured with an epoxy resin. SOLUTION: A phenolic compound obtained by reacting a phenol, an aromatic aldehyde compound and formaldehyde, wherein the aromatic aldehyde compound is added in an amount of 0.1 to 4.0 with respect to the number of moles of the formaldehyde.
