Kind Code: A1 A luminescent ceramic for a light-emitting device that is more robust than conventional phosphor layers and has a low sensitivity to temperature. A semiconductor light emitting device having a light emitting layer disposed between an n-type region and a p-type region is integrated with a ceramic layer disposed in an optical path of light emitted by the light emitting layer. The ceramic layer is composed of or has a wavelength converting material such as a phosphor. The luminescent ceramic layers according to embodiments of the present invention are more robust and less sensitive to temperature than conventional phosphor layers. In addition, since the luminescent ceramic layer has little scattering, high conversion efficiency exceeding that of the conventional phosphor layer can be obtained. [Selection] Figure 2 |
