abstract The present invention provides a bleaching assistant and a pulp bleaching method capable of satisfactorily bleaching both chemical pulp and mechanical pulp even under alkaline conditions of pH 11 or higher in pulp bleaching using hydrogen peroxide. The following (a) component: a polymer compound having a constitutional unit represented by the following general formula (I) and the following (b) component: a copper compound, and pulp bleaching during pulp bleaching During the treatment, the mass of the component (a) is 5 to 1000 mass ppm with respect to the dry mass of the pulp, the mass of copper is 0.12 to 30 mass ppm with respect to the dry mass of the pulp, and [component (a)].
