A novel type of heterocyclic compound and a method of using the same are provided. An alkenylene having a substituted / unsaturated 5-membered, 6-membered or 7-membered heterocyclic ring having one or more nitrogen atoms and one or more carbon atoms, in a ring position adjacent to the ring nitrogen atom. A compound having a moiety or a moiety linked to another heterocycle via an alkynylene moiety. The compound functions as a receptor agonist and antagonist in the nervous system, and can be used for various purposes such as regulation of physiological processes. In particular, it modulates the activity of excitatory amino acid receptors. As an embodiment, a method for modulating a metabotropic glutamate receptor, a method for treating / preventing a disease using a heterocyclic compound, such as a pulmonary disease, a nervous system disease, a cardiovascular disease, a gastrointestinal disease, an endocrine System diseases, exocrine diseases, skin diseases, cancer, and ocular diseases.
