A novel medicinal effect is found on the leaves of Ashwagandha that can be collected in large quantities at a low cost, and its action is verified, and based on this, a new and useful drug is provided. An agent for controlling sensitivity of cells to ultraviolet rays or an ultraviolet protective agent containing an aqueous extract of Ashwagandha leaves, particularly a water-soluble protein contained in the extract as an active ingredient. Furthermore, the water extract has a cell killing promoting action at a relatively high concentration, particularly under irradiation of ultraviolet rays against cancer cells, and can be used as an anticancer agent.
