abstract An environmentally beneficial process for the production of methanol from various carbon dioxide sources, such as fossil fuel-fired power plant flue gas, industrial exhaust gas or the atmosphere itself. The conversion of carbon dioxide by electrochemical reduction produces formic acid and some amounts of formaldehyde and methanol. This formic acid can be used as a carbon and hydrogen source to produce methanol, dimethyl ether and other products.
