abstract | An improved bulk polymerization process utilizing a lanthanide-based catalyst system to produce cis-1,4-polydienes having commercially desirable Mooney viscosity without the need to use high levels of catalyst. The method includes contacting a conjugated diene monomer with a lanthanide-based catalyst system in the presence of less than 20% by weight of the monomer, the organic solvent, and the total weight of the polymer produced. The lanthanide-based catalyst system is a combination or reaction product of (a) a lanthanide compound, (b) an organoaluminum hydride, (c) trihydrocarbylaluminum, and (d) a halogen-containing compound.
