abstract The present invention provides an industrially advantageous process for producing 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile by reusing unreacted 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol and cyanide donor. In a method for producing 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile from 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol and a cyanide donor by an enzymatic reaction in an aqueous system, (1) A step of distilling the aqueous reaction solution after completion of the enzyme reaction to recover unreacted cyanide donor and 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol; (2) a step of repeatedly using the recovered cyanide donor and 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol for the enzymatic reaction at least once, A process for producing 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyronitrile.
