[MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] An enzyme having the following characteristics, a gene encoding the enzyme, and a melanin decomposing method in which the enzyme acts on melanin in the presence of manganese and hydrogen peroxide. (1) Decomposes melanin derived from hair in the presence of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of manganese. (2) The optimum reaction pH is 6 or less. (3) Hair melanin degradation activity (specific activity, U / mg) at pH 4.5 is more than twice that of horseradish peroxidase. [Selection figure] None
