Methods and apparatus for using Raman-active probe constructs to assay biological samples |
abstract |
Various methods are provided for using Raman or SERS activity probe constructs to detect analytes in biological samples, such as protein-containing analytes in body fluids. The probe moiety in the Raman active construct binds to and identifies a specific known analyte in the biological sample so that the methods of the invention can provide information about the amino acid composition of the protein-containing analyte or fragment in the sample. The probe moiety is designed to interact chemically with functional groups commonly found in certain amino acids. In some cases, Raman or SERS activity probe constructs can be used to generate specific protein-containing analytes or such analytes when used in the methods of the invention so that a protein profile of a patient sample can be generated. The type can be identified. The disclosed method can be used to identify the disease state of a patient when compared to a Raman database or a SERS spectrum of a normal sample. |
