A rare earth magnet 1 according to a preferred embodiment includes a magnet element body 2 containing a rare earth element and a protective layer 4 formed on the surface of the magnet element body 2. The protective layer 4 includes a metal layer 14 formed so as to cover the surface of the magnet body 2 and fine particles made of a single metal, a metal oxide, or a metal hydroxide dispersed and attached on the surface of the metal layer 14. 24.
