An encapsulated Michael addition catalyst is provided. An encapsulated catalyst provides unprecedented control over pot life, cure rate in a two-component or multi-component system in the presence of a Michael donor and acceptor and is used as a one-component composition. As a result, compositions useful as adhesives, sealants, coatings, elastomers, films, and foams are obtained. The encapsulated catalyst prevents premature reaction of various reactants during storage, processing, and ruptures the capsule upon application of certain events, such as heat, pressure or solvation, and cures rapidly. The use of an encapsulated catalyst provides control over pot life, cure rate, which is not present in conventional compositions. The use of an encapsulated catalyst results in the possibility of a previously unknown one-component Michael addition composition. The use of an encapsulated catalyst provides a very rapid cure upon capsule rupture and allows rapid green strength development. [Selection figure] None |
