The present invention provides an assembly for the manufacture of a medical device having a porous coating comprising hydrogen peroxide. Particularly relevant medical devices are catheters (eg urinary catheters), endoscopes, laryngoscopes, supply tubes, drainage tubes, guide wires, condoms, urisheaths, barrier coatings (eg grabs, stents and Other implants), extracorporeal blood tracts, membranes (eg, for dialysis, blood filters), circulatory assist devices, wound care bandages, and colostomy bags. The coating is in particular a hydrophilic coating made from cross-linked polyvinyl pyrrolidone. In one embodiment, the assembly contains a dry catheter element in one compartment of the package and an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution in another compartment. The solution may contain stabilizers such as chelating agents and osmotic pressure increasing agents. Catheters for insertion into the urethra are useful for the treatment, mitigation, or prevention of microbial infections such as urinary tract infections (UTI). |
