abstract | A medical device such as a stent and a method for manufacturing such a medical device for delivering a bioactive substance to a body tissue of a patient are disclosed. The medical device has a tubular side wall, and the side wall includes a plurality of struts each having an outer surface, an inner surface opposite to the outer surface, and at least one side surface adjacent to and connecting the outer surface and the inner surface. The outer surface or inner surface is at least partially covered by a first polymeric material and a first coating material such as a bioactive agent such as paclitaxel, paclitaxel analog, paclitaxel derivative, or combinations thereof. It has been broken. The outer or inner surface not covered by the first coating is covered by a second coating comprising a second polymeric material, which is substantially free of the first coating material. Preferably, the first coating is applied to the outer surface of the strut. The disclosed method increases the efficiency and control of the application of bioactive substances to medical devices and reduces the exposure of patients to unnecessary amounts of bioactive substances. |
