PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device with little scattering and increased conversion efficiency. A semiconductor light emitting device including a light emitting layer disposed between an n-type region and a p-type region is combined with a ceramic layer disposed in a path of light emitted by the light emitting layer. The ceramic layer is made of or includes a wavelength converting material such as a phosphor. The luminescent ceramic layers according to embodiments of the present invention are more robust and less sensitive to temperature than prior art phosphor layers. In addition, the luminescent ceramic exhibits less scattering and thus can increase the conversion efficiency compared to prior art phosphor layers. [Selection] Figure 2 |
