titleOfInvention Metal halide lamp and its lighting method
abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp with little change in lamp performance even when dimming. In a metal halide lamp, an arc tube 150 is housed in an outer bulb having a base at one end. The arc tube 150 includes a main tube portion 160, narrow tube portions 170 and 175 extending from both ends 162 and 163 of the main tube portion 160, and a pair of electrode introduction bodies 180 and 185. The main tube portion 160 and the narrow tubes 170 and 175 are formed of a light-transmitting polycrystalline alumina material, and thereby, a discharge vessel 155 having a discharge space 161 therein is formed. The lamp power in the range of dimming lighting is set to the highest lamp power Wmax [W] and the lowest lamp power Wmin [W], and the surface area S [cm 2 ] of the discharge space 161 is Wmax / 60 ≦ S ≦ Wmin / 20 is satisfied.
