abstract | The present invention provides a process for producing a polyvinyl alcohol copolymer comprising a vinyl alcohol unit and a cationic group-containing monomer unit with an improved yield. Hydrolysis of a protective group of a copolymer comprising a vinyl alcohol unit and a protected cationic group-containing monomer unit and containing a hydrolyzate of a carboxylic acid vinyl ester as an impurity is carried out in the presence of an ammonia derivative. And a method for producing a polyvinyl alcohol copolymer, and a carboxylic acid vinyl ester of a copolymer comprising a carboxylic acid vinyl ester unit and a cationic group-containing monomer unit, wherein the copolymer contains a carboxylic acid vinyl ester as an impurity.
