PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for producing 1,6-hexanediol at low cost by using cyclohexanone as a starting material. SOLUTION: A crude ε-caprolactone fraction obtained from a reaction step of an organic peracid and / or hydroperoxide with cyclohexanone, or a residual ε-caprolactone obtained after separating ε-caprolactone from the crude ε-caprolactone fraction. By-product fractions mainly composed of oxycaproic acid, adipic acid, and these oligomers as by-products, either directly or after esterification with alcohol, 1,6 by catalytic reduction reaction in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst -A process for producing 1,6-hexanediol to obtain hexanediol.
