abstract |
Provided is a method for producing at a high reaction selectivity an alkanediol like 1,5-pentanediol by using a non-chromium-based catalyst not containing chromium atoms to cause the reaction of a cyclic ether group-containing methanol like tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The method for producing an alkanediol of which both molecular terminals indicated in formula (2) are hydroxyl groups is characterized by reacting hydrogen and the cyclic ether group-containing methanol indicated in formula (1) in the presence of a metal catalyst containing copper atoms and at least one coexisting atom selected from the group consisting of the elements in periods 3-6 of groups 2-14 of the periodic table (excepting chromium) and the lanthanide elements. |
