abstract An object of the present invention is to provide a phenolic resin composition for a friction material which has high mechanical strength and hardness, is excellent in toughness, and enables to obtain a high friction coefficient. A phenolic resin composition for a friction material, comprising a hydroxybenzaldehyde-modified phenolic resin and hexamethylenetetramine, wherein the hydroxybenzaldehyde-modified novolak-type phenolic resin is derived from an aldehyde in the resin. Preferably, 3 to 90 mol% of the substituents of the substituted methylene group (-CHR-, R is a substituent) is a hydroxyphenyl group. [Selection diagram] None
