Disclosed is a 3- (methylamino) -1- (2-thienyl) propan-1-ol (abbreviated as "MMAA") of the following formula, which is useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a pharmacologically active compound. To provide a method suitable for industrial practice for producing an optically active substance of (RS) -MMAA is optically resolved by a diastereomer method using an optically active mandelic acid derivative or an optically active tartaric acid derivative as a resolving agent.
