abstract | An alkaline storage battery having excellent charge / discharge cycle characteristics and suppressing an increase in internal pressure of the battery during charging is provided. A negative electrode for an alkaline storage battery in which an active material powder is supported on a substrate, wherein the substrate is selected from an alkali-electrolyte-resistant transition metal and lead on a surface of a core material made of an alkali-resistant metal. An alkaline storage battery employing a negative electrode provided with a layer made of the metal by reducing an oxide or hydroxide of at least one metal element, wherein the amount of the metal contained in the layer is determined by a unit of core material.
