A novel nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative useful as a constituent component of an organic electroluminescence device (organic EL device) is provided. By using this nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative in at least one of the organic compound layers, high luminance is obtained. Provided is an organic EL device capable of achieving a longer life by increasing the efficiency of light emission and improving the adhesion of electrodes. SOLUTION: General formula (1) HAr-L-Ar 1 -Ar 2 (1) (In the formula, HAr is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring which may have a substituent, and L is a single bond, an arylene group which may have a substituent or may have a substituent. A heteroarylene group, Ar 1 is a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group optionally having a substituent, and Ar 2 is an aryl group or a substituent optionally having a substituent. And a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic derivative represented by the formula (1), and an organic EL element containing the derivative in at least one of the organic compound layers.
