(57) [Summary]nThe process of the present invention provides an improvement over the prior art methanol carbonylation process. This substantially reduces the formation of carbonyl impurities. Maintaining a hydrogen partial pressure of about 0.1 to 4 psia at a total reaction pressure of about 15 to about 40 atmospheres reduces the formation of carbonyl impurities, especially acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde and 2-ethylcrotonaldehyde, in the methanol carbonylation reaction.
