(57) Abstract: To provide a magnetic recording medium having good electromagnetic conversion characteristics, and to provide a magnetic recording medium having a high output, a low friction coefficient, and excellent running properties. SOLUTION: In a magnetic recording medium in which a coating layer having at least a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder is provided on a support, pores in the coating layer are measured from adsorption branches when measured by an N 2 adsorption method. The peak value of the obtained pore distribution is 4 to 8 nm, and the peak value of the pore distribution obtained from the desorbed branches is 3 to 8 nm.
