abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved fuel element (10) for a nuclear reactor, comprising a core made of a nuclear fuel material (16) surrounded by a composite cladding tube (17). The cladding (17) has an outer metal tube section (21) of a known alloy used for such cladding purposes. The outer metal tube portion (21) is metallurgically bonded to industrial pure zirconium to which a controlled amount of iron is added as a trace alloying element. Zirconium with the addition of iron as a trace alloying element creates an inner metal barrier (22) that provides the beneficial balance between stress corrosion cracking resistance and corrosion resistance while retaining the beneficial properties of pure zirconium (eg, ductility). .
