titleOfInvention | Process for the peroxidation of alpha-olefin polymers |
abstract | Linear alpha-olefin polymers such as polypropylene and polybutene are peroxidized by contacting the powdered polymer with a gas containing molecular oxygen and a volatile organic hydroperoxide, peroxide or perester. The polymers may be isotactic or may comprise atactic and stereoblock polymers. The volatile compounds specified are t-butyl hydroperoxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, dibutyl peroxide and t-butyl peracetate or perbenzoate. The peroxidized polymers react spontaneously to form graft polymers with monomers such as alkyl acrylates and methacrylates and styrene; a particular product claimed being styrene grafted on to peroxidized butene-1 polymer. The products of the invention may be spun and stetched to form textile fibres, staple fibres and yarns, especially from mixes of isotactic polypropylene with grafted peroxidized polypropylene. Example 5 illustrates the dyeing of a saponified yarn of such a mix, using Astrazon red (Colour Index 1635) and acetic acid. In Example 4, a polypropylene mix with 7,2% grafted polymethacrylate is melt-spun at 230 DEG C., under 3 kg./cm.2 pressure, using a winding speed of 300m./min. The fibres so made are treated with a boiling N/10 alkali solution to partially saponify the grafted polymethacrylate, optionally after stretching.ALSO:A graft polymer derived from peroxidized polypropylene and methyl acrylate is mixed with polypropylene, the mixture is spun, optionally stretched, partially saponified and the fibres are then dyed using Astrazon red 6B (C.I. 1635) using an acetic acid bath. |
